Looking for a sweet way to spend time with your family? Consider a trip to Maple Madness at Beechwood Farms on Saturday, March 27, 2010 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. This annual event features a pancake breakfast, a nature walk, sap collecting stations, and a craft for children. Tickets are $6 for members and $10 for nonmembers with children under 2 free.

Every fall, maple trees send the sugar that they produce over the summer to their roots. In the spring, the sugar runs up through the trunk in the form of sap. A long time ago, some genius discovered that the trunks of the maple tree could be tapped in the early springtime to collect the sap. The mildly sweet liquid is then boiled down to concentrate the sugars to produce maple syrup.

This event is a sweet way to show your children one of the relationships between nature and food. It also helps support the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania and Beechwood Farms Nature Preserve. If you are interested, please take a look at their website http://www.aswp.org/
